Yakima City Council considering reorganizing departments

YAKIMA, Wash.-- The Yakima City Council is considering some changes the city manager believes will make the city run more efficiently.

They're planning to reorganize several departments and focus them more on helping businesses and customers.

Those include separating community and economic functions, combining several departments into a Utilities and Engineering Department, and hiring two fire inspectors.

"I think it's a necessity to ensure better public safety... Particularly life safety... That we include inspections in the fire department and enhance that operation," says City Manager Tony O'Rourke.

The city's fire inspector position was cut earlier this year because of budget issues.

The city council will consider O'Rourke's suggestions at their meeting tomorrow night.
