YAKIMA, Wash.-- Students who take part in a popular, free after school program in Yakima can expect to start paying for it later this year.
Between 80 and 100 kids take part in the Beyond the Bell program at Roosevelt Elementary School.
Yakima Parks and Recreation puts on the free after school program for kids, but with looming budget problems they just don't have the money to keep offering it for free.
"Budgets have been a real challenge and revenue has always been a challenge the last couple years and money's just not there to provide free programming," said Parks and Rec. Manager, Ken Wilkinson.
Parents will start having to pay $3 per child, per day for the program.
Wilkinson says a fee of $5 per child would cover the whole cost of the program, but to keep the price down, the city plans to split the cost with parents.
