FARES TAKE OFF: Higher fares boosted quarterly profits at US Airways Group Inc. to $306 million, a company record.
FUEL'S DESCENT: Lower fuel prices helped, too. It saved some $40 million versus what its fuel bill would have been if prices had stayed the same as last year.
WHAT'S NEXT: American Airlines will study merger possibilities as it reorganizes under bankruptcy protection, and US Airways is expecting to be part of that process. US Airways has been publicly pushing for a merger.
